Does CME Work?
Monday, September 29, 2025
Join us for this important session as we continue remembering seminal publications in continuing medical education (CME) and continuing professional development (CPD) over the past 50 years. We will have a rare opportunity to revisit important literature and hold conversations with scholars who have made major contributions to our field.
In this session, we will explore several studies led by Dr. Dave Davis that take a rigorous approach to examining the effectiveness of CME and addressing the central question: Does CME work?
In the 90s, inspired by the rise of evidence-based medicine and the emphasis on rigorous outcome measurement, colleagues at McMaster University and elsewhere began conducting systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials of educational interventions, some of them ‘classical’ CME, others on more innovative formats. Their results were published in JAMA, with at least one study remaining among the most highly cited in the journal’s history.
In a Q&A discussion, Dr. Davis will address the following questions, in addition to those raised by participants:
Speaker
Dave Davis, MD, CCFP, FCFP, FRCP(hon), FSACME
Professor Emeritus, Family & Community Medicine, University of Toronto, Canada
Adjunct Professor of Medical Education, Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, Dubai, UAE Senior Global Advisor, AXDEV, Montreal, Quebec
Virtual Research Roundtable Tips and Tricks to Submit a Research Grant

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM Eastern Time
Free registration for SACME Members / $30 for Non-Members
Event Overview
The Virtual Research Roundtable (VRR) is a unique opportunity for individuals to deepen their research knowledge and connect with peers. This casual 1-hour webinar will feature a presentation by our esteemed colleagues, Morag Paton and Mahan Kulasegaram, covering key considerations when preparing a research grant, including how to develop a strong research question, seek feedback, avoid common pitfalls, and more.
Following the short presentation, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions, explore how the presented concepts can enhance their own research, and discuss potential collaborative opportunities with the presenter and other colleagues.
Join us for this engaging event designed to grow our research capacity, exchange ideas, and foster collaborative work. We look forward to your participation and the vibrant discussion that will follow.
This event is eligible for SACME’s Certificate of Recognition Program in CPD/CE Scholarship.
Speakers
Morag Paton, PhD
Associate Director, Maintenance of Certification & Education Consultation Services, CPD, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, Education Scholar, Wilson Centre, University Health Network & Temerty Faculty of Medicine, Investigator, Equity in Health Systems Lab, Bruyère Research Institute
Morag is a higher and health professions education professional with a background in higher education, health professions education, administration, and CPD scholarship. She holds a Masters in Health Professions Education and a PhD in Higher Education, both from the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. In both 2023 and 2024 she was a co-winner of the Fox Award for Best Research Presentation from the Society for Academic Continuing Medical Education. Her research problematizes assumptions and practices in HPE, using both theoretical and operational/administrative expertise.
Mahan Kulasegaram, PhD
Director of DFCM’s Office of Education Scholarship, Associate Professor in the DFCM at the University of Toronto and Assessment Scientist in the MD Program
Dr. Kulasegaram's research examines educational assessment from both a psychometric and cognitive perspective. His work aims to advance assessment theory and practice by conceptualizing assessment as an instructional and advancement opportunity. This involves re-examining the entire context of assessment - the objectives, process, tools, learners, and raters - from theoretical perspectives informed by cognitive theory and best evidence on measurement. His other interest is in how assessment data can be used to inform and assist learners, teachers, and program leaders. In this area, he studies the social and scientific value of 'Big Data' in medical education.

The Virtual Research Roundtable (VRR) is a unique opportunity for individuals to deepen their research knowledge and connect with peers. This casual 1-hour webinar will feature a presentation by some of our esteemed colleagues on a specific research method or topic.
Following the short presentation, engage in a dynamic conversation with the presenter and other colleagues. You'll have the chance to ask questions, explore how the presented concepts can enhance your own research, and discuss potential collaborative opportunities.
Edeline Mitton
SUNY Downstate Medical Center
A 20-year veteran of the State University of New York (SUNY) system, Edeline Mitton, MEd, is the director of the Office of Continuing Medical Education at Downstate Medical Center. She received a Bachelor of Arts in psychology with a minor in marketing from the City University of New York College of Staten Island, a master’s in education with a concentration in instructional design from the University of Phoenix, and a Medical Informatics Certification at SUNY Downstate. In addition, she is involved in the cultivation of mindfulness meditation and yoga therapy and research. Mitton has been involved with PCORI since 2014, serving as a merit reviewer and an Ambassador. She believes in the PCORI mission of putting patients at the center of research. As an educator for physicians, she believes that the patient should be front and center when looking at practice gaps. What is it that this physician is lacking and needs to improve upon to impact that patient’s health? How do we not involve the patient in their care? They know their bodies, the spaces in between, and what feels right. Mitton is also a caretaker and advocate for Alzheimer’s patients.

Virtual Research Roundtable CPD Meets QI: Opportunities for Research Alignments and Synergies
Thursday, January 22, 2026
The Virtual Research Roundtable (VRR) is a unique opportunity for individuals to deepen their research knowledge and connect with peers. This casual 1-hour webinar will feature:
Joanne Goldman, PhD
Scientist, The Wilson Centre
Research Scientist, The Centre for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety
Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto
Joanne’s research program involves the use of social science theories and qualitative research methodologies to study quality improvement, patient safety, and interprofessional education and workplace practices. When she began to study interprofessional education, she was struck by misalignments between interprofessional education programs and everyday clinical practices. She therefore was inspired to study interprofessional interactions in internal medicine and intensive care clinical contexts using sociology of professions theory, the findings of which could inform education approaches that reflect the complexity of real life practice. In recent years, Joanne’s research program has expanded to focus on quality improvement and patient safety, again bringing the same interest to study education and workplace practices. In her research on clinical and organizational safety programs, she examines how socio-cultural factors characterize and shape individuals’ and groups’ understandings, behaviours, and interactions in relation to patient safety. This work informs Joanne’s research in quality and safety education as she aims to promote the use of social science and education theory and research in studying and implementing quality and safety education.
