Integrating Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Concepts into Simulation Pre-briefing and Debriefing (WA-11)
Tuesday, April 4, 2023, 1:00PM - 2:30PM CDT
Workshop Registration Fee is $50 for all annual meeting registrants
Workshop Registration Fee is $100 for non-registrants of the annual meeting
Simulation-based methodologies are entrenched in healthcare continuing professional development providing a safe space to practice and grow as professionals. In recent years concepts of diversity, equity and inclusivity (DEI) have come to the forefront of health professions education and simulation educators have taken up the call, yet many are unsure how to incorporate them into their simulation practice. In 2021, the International Nursing Association of Clinical Simulation and Learning published the Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice. Using these standards as a guide, simulation educators from all health professions can improve their practice through the intentional incorporation of DEI concepts.
Workshop participants will receive a short presentation on the Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice in Pre-briefing and Debriefing followed by an introduction to concepts of DEI. Participants will then reflect on the simulation practice in their local contexts along with what DEI concepts are most applicable to them when conducting a pre-brief and debrief through a needs assessment. Following the self-reflective exercise, two frameworks will be presented to guide the intentional incorporation of DEI concepts into their simulation-based education: Pre-briefing for Cultural Humility (Foronda et al., 2022) and Debriefing for Cultural Humility (Foronda, 2021). Moving into small group work, participants will use the two frameworks along with the Standards to develop a script to use in their home institution.
